Contamination of Farms by Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Options for Compensation Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
There is no satisfactory legal remedy for farmers in Australia whose farm has been contaminated by genetically modified (GM) material. This is a deficiency of Australia’s Gene Technology Act 2000 and it has not been remedied. In the Marsh v Baxter case (2010-2016) an organic farm in Western Australia (WA) was contaminated with GM canola from a neighbouring farm. The organic farm lost its certification (along with the price premium for organic produce). The organic farmer (Marsh) sued the GM farmer (Baxter) for the agreed damages of A$85,000. The case was lost in the WA Supreme Court, then in the Court of Appeal, and finally it was rejected by the High Court of Australia. The legal fees were in the order of A$2,000,000, which is quite disproportionate to...

Farming Differentiation in the Rural-urban Interface of the Middle Mountains, Nepal: Application of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)Modeling Organic Eprints
Bhatta, G.D.; Doppler, W..
This article investigates the dominant factors of farming differentiation in the rural-urban interface of the densely populated Kathmandu Valley, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) modeling. The rural-urban interface in the Kathmandu Valley is an important vegetable production pocket which supplies a large amount of the vegetables in the city core. While subsistence farming in the rural area is characterized by a system which integrates livestock and forestry with agriculture, the intensification in the urban fringe is characterized by triple crop rotations and market-oriented intensive vegetable production. Seven factors which were supposed to cause farming variation in the interface were incorporated in the AHP framework and then subjected to...

GMOs: the wisdom of crowds & the folly of deregulation Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Australia’s Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) is pushing to change the definition of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The proposed changes would remove from regulation some GMOs that are presently subject to regulation by the OGTR. At present GMOs are subject to risk analysis, to safety evaluations, and to GM labelling if used in food. The proposed regulations, if they are not disallowed by the Australian Parliament, will water down the definition of GMOs in Australia, will have Australia applying definitions of GMOs that are different from major trading partners, and they risk damaging the clean and green export reputation of Australia's food and agriculture sectors. The GM proposed deregulation would be bad science and bad...

Organic farming systems as a driver for change Organic Eprints
Since 1980’s, NJF members from Nordic and Baltic countries have been engaged in research, development and extension work in organic farming and food systems. Several NJF seminars have been arranged to highlight organic food and agriculture, bringing together experts from different branches of sience, from ecology to economics. This seminar in Denmark 2013 is part of this chain of seminars, which started in Alnarp, Sweden 2005 and was followed by Tartu, Estonia in 2009. This seminar is organized in collaboration with ICROFS - International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems and EPOK - Centre for Organic Food and Farming at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Organic agriculture has grown to a sector with profound impact on the societal...

Tasmania’s GMO Moratorium: 17 Good Reasons Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
The Tasmanian GMO Moratorium has served the interests of the state well. The ‘clean and green’ image of Tasmania continues to grow from strength to strength. This branding is underpinned by consumer, visitor, and investor perceptions. These perceptions continue to be validated by Tasmania’s GMO Moratorium. GM technology lacks a social licence and is a cause for social friction. GM food is not wanted by consumers. GMOs attract a price penalty in the market place, and they contaminate non-GM farms and the food chain. The two GM crops in Australia are GM canola and GM cotton. The former is in decline (5% per year) and the latter is in decline (down 53% from the peak of 2010) and exhibits a highly volatile and erratic pattern of uptake. The relaxation of the...
